How to Rock a Massage Interview
I’ve been both the interviewer and interviewee…is that a word? We’ll go with it…and it’s just not my favorite thing. Want to know what’s my favorite thing right now? Licorice Bon Bons. Yes, I’m a 38-year-old grandma.
Massage interviews feel like a massive test. Everyone’s second guessing all they say and do and it’s the equivalent of being on a stage by yourself.
So how can you relax and do well in an interview so you can land the massage job of your dreams?
I’ll let you in on what I look for when I’m interviewing so you can feel confident!
It’s not really about the questions
I usually interview at a coffee shop since I’m mobile and don’t have a traditional office. I always buy the candidate a drink of their choice, and I watch for their behavior. No, it’s not a test (okay maybe it’s a bit of a test), but I’m looking for one main thing. Are they grateful? I remember one girl said, “Oh wow, are you sure? Thank you so much! That’s so nice.” and before the interview even began, I thought, “Yup! You’ve got the job.” Because if you’re humble and kind, that’s the primary indicator of an excellent practitioner.
Hands-on is about listening
I’m not looking for you to show me all then fancy shmancy moves you’ve picked up over the years. I’m not looking for you to miraculously fix my tendinitis. I’m paying attention to your listening skills. Did I ask for you to avoid my feet? Did I ask for a focus on my low back? If you can listen, you will go far. Also, I’m a stickler for intake questions and secure draping.
Fake it until you make it
“True courage is being afraid, and going ahead and doing your job anyhow". - General Norman Schwarzkopf. I get it, you’re nervous. But if you can quell the nerves and speak clearly, you will out your clients at ease. So demonstrate this in the interview!
I promise you we are not looking for perfection. We are all human. We just want to know that clients will be comfortable in your care.
