The federal government has proposed a significant change to the GST/HST treatment of massage therapy services in Canada. But what does this actually mean for massage therapists and their businesses?
In this episode, Melissa and Jordan break down the proposed GST/HST exemption, discuss what we know (and what we don't know) about implementation and eligibility, and explore some of the less obvious financial implications.
One of the biggest considerations? Input tax credits (ITCs). While massage therapists currently registered for GST/HST can generally recover the GST/HST they pay on eligible business expenses, moving to exempt supplies could mean losing some or all of those ITCs. In other words, GST/HST that you previously recovered may now become an actual business expense.
We discuss what this could mean for your bottom line, how it might affect your bookkeeping, and why massage therapists should be paying attention before making changes to their tax collection practices.
As always, we're here to make the business and tax side of running a massage therapy practice a little less confusing!
