How Business and Income Tax Essentials for RMTs Came to Be

Blog updated: 2026 — This article reflects the evolution of our business education offerings for RMTs.

Back in early 2020, I had plans to teach a business class in person at the Lymph Balance Centre in Calgary, Alberta. Robin Devine, the owner, generously offered a space for the course, and everything was lined up for a March 16th launch.

Then, of course, the world changed.

When the Alberta government announced on March 15th that schools would be closing, it quickly became clear that in-person teaching wasn’t going to happen. Rather than cancel, I decided to pivot. I spent a few frantic days researching online teaching platforms, setting everything up on Zoom, and adapting the course for a virtual format. The first webinar ran on March 18th.

There were a few technical hiccups (as you’d expect), but overall it was a huge success. Over the following months, I ran several more sessions and taught dozens of RMTs from across Canada. What started as a one-off in-person class quickly became something much bigger.

I’ve always loved teaching accounting, income tax, and finance. I especially love figuring out how to address the topics that tend to make people’s eyes glaze over. My goal has never been to turn RMTs into accountants, but to help them feel confident managing the financial side of their own businesses. With the right explanations and real-world examples, these topics don’t have to be intimidating.

As the webinars evolved, so did the content. The questions RMTs asked, the challenges they shared, and the common areas of confusion all helped shape what eventually became our comprehensive course: Business and Income Tax Essentials for RMTs.

The course now covers many of the same foundational topics from those original webinars, including:

  • Business structures for RMTs (sole proprietorships, partnerships, and corporations)

  • Pros and cons of incorporation and what to consider before making that decision

  • An introduction to financial statements, accounting methods, and income tax brackets

  • Practical bookkeeping strategies

  • Common and eligible business deductions for RMTs

  • A walkthrough of filing income taxes online

While we no longer offer the original live webinar, the course has been thoughtfully refined, expanded, and updated to reflect current practices and regulations. It’s designed to be practical, approachable, and immediately useful, whether you’re newly self-employed or have been in practice for years.

Managing the financial side of your practice is an essential part of running a sustainable massage therapy business. This course exists to make that part feel less overwhelming and a lot more doable.
